These animals have the back covered with short spines and smooth, and the lower parts with hair. There are 16 species in the world of hedgehogs divided into five genera, found in parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and New Zealand. Hedgehogs are primarily nocturnal animals that feed on insects, snails, slugs and vegetables. Their main predators are owls and ferrets.
